SIDE EFFECTS OF RIMONABANT | ||||||
| Rimonabant (Acomplia) is an anorectic drug from the cannabonoid family which has to be
taken in very small doses regularly for achieving its clinical objectives.
Like any other drug it has its share of side effects. Of course most of them
are benign. Side Effects of Rimonabant (Acomplia) Rimonabant (Acomplia) works on the principle of selectively blocking receptors in the nervous system. The drug, therefore, should not be administered to children below eighteen years of age, patients with impaired liver or renal functions, for those suffering from epilepsy and pregnant or breast feeding women. Some of the other effects noticed during laboratory trials are enumerated in the succeeding paragraphs. Irritability Mood related disorders occur primarily because of the suppression of craving for food, thirst, consumption of smoking and alcohol. It has very little relation with the clinical action of the drug on the system. Once the patient has been explained the purpose of the medication and the therapy the irritability too disappears. Restlessness. This is actually a corollary to mood swings which manifest themselves in a patient undergoing therapy to reduce cravings for addictions to food, tobacco or alcohol. Once Rimonabant (Acomplia) blocks the relevant receptors in the brain, this restlessness too vanishes. Muscle Cramps and Joint Pain. These side effects are very rare but may occur in a few patients in the older age group. The blocking of the receptors in the brain sometimes may lead to cognitive impairment in the elderly. Muscle cramps and mild joint pains are, therefore, taken care of with other simple medications. Diarrhea. This is an extremely rare side effect but it may occur as Rimonabant (Acomplia) also acts as a gastro intestinal lipase inhibitor. The diarrhea is treated as a separate disorder in patients who experience it. Anxiety. This occurs because of the pronounced drop in desire to over eat or stay from tobacco and alcohol. A Last Word Rimonabant (Acomplia) has a benign safety profile and many of the side effects observed during laboratory trials were not noticed in actual patients. |
